Is Google Negatively Affecting Our Intelligence
Technology has taken us to the point where we can do nearly anything online. Search engines such as Google will let you search anything you can possibly imagine. Using Google or other search engines distracts us that affects the way we think and remember things remember things. This leads back to the question, is Google negatively affecting our intelligence? Google is negatively affecting our intelligence because we are bombarded with distractions and the information we read is stored as short-term memory.
To begin with Google is negatively affecting our intelligence with distractions that appear while we do a search. According to Source A it mentions, “ The net bombards us with messages and other bits of data, and every one of those interruptions breaks our train of thought. We end up scatterbrained. The fact is, you will never think deeply if you’re always Googling, texting, and surfing.” This explains how distractions interrupt our learning and affects our thinking process while reading online. According to Source A it reveals, “ If we we’re are distracted we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” This interprets that with all the distraction on the internet we will understand, remember, and learn less. Now distractions on Google negatively affect our intelligence, but what about our memorization.
In addition to providing distractions, memorization is another way of how Google is negatively affecting our intelligence. According to Source B it explains how “ 70 percent of people didn't know their children’s phone numbers by heart, and 49 percent have not memorized their partners numbers.” We rely on our phones’ storage capacity and technology that we cannot memorise our siblings or our partners numbers. Others may say that there is no need to remember phone numbers because of our phones. Studies show that you retain more information when you read. According to Source C it states, “ The next time the same information isn't available, we’re more likely to remember it since we took the time to enhance the information in our mind.” In other words we are more likely to remember something from a book because we take more time to learn it and process it.
In conclusion, Google is negatively affecting our intelligence because it bombards us with distractions and the information we read is stored as short-term memory. Many agree because of how it is affecting the way we learn. Also, when reading you can retain more information than the internet. When using Google you have to keep in mind the risks of being distracted by ads and the possibility of not remembering the information you searched after a while.
Freedom of Speech
On January 2011 a student from Itawamba Agricultural High School named Taylor Bell rapped about two coaches who sexually harrassed two female students. In his rap he used a lot of profanity and threats to the coaches. Taylor Bell was suspended for his rap which he posted on Youtube and Facebook even though he wrote the lyrics outside of a school setting. I agree with the decision to suspend him because his rap lyrics were offensive and threatening towards the teachers. The message that he sent was also distracting to the students.
To begin with, I am in favor of the decision in which Taylor Bell was suspended because his rap lyrics were threatening to the teachers. According to Taylor’s rap lyrics it states, “Looking down girls shirts/drool running down your mouth/you f****ing with the wrong/going to get a pistol down your mouth.” This proves that Taylor was threatening to hurt the two coaches by saying he is going to put a pistol down their mouth. Not only do his lyrics cross the line for freedom of speech, he also extends his right to bear arms. Not only do I agree that his rap lyrics were distracting so does the school district. According to the Fifth Circuit it ruled, “The song caused a “substantial disruption” in school and that administrators reasonably understood it to be threatening, harassing and intimidating.” In other words, his lyrics were threatening and frightening to people in a school setting. Many others may say that those were just lyrics and that he probably did not mean it. But to Taylor’s peers they saw it as a threat. His threats were part of why he was suspended and as a result caused disruptions to the school.
Furthermore, Taylor Bell was suspended because his rap lyrics were disrupting to the people around him. According to school officials, “To forecast substantial disruption of or material interference with school activities.” is reason enough to suspend a student. People at Itawamba High School were being disrupted because they feared Taylor Bell was going to act upon his lyrics. They feared him coming to school with gun to hurt the coaches and perhaps innocent by standards. According to Taylor Bell he rapped, “I’m going to hit you with my rueger (reference to a brand of firearm); “[I am] going to get a pistol down your mouth.” Teachers were distracted and cautious because of what he said in his rap and were worried that one day he might shoot one of the coaches or even them. Others may say that he is a young person and doesn’t know what he is saying and he is naive to act with violence. Some may argue that he is expressing his frustrations in the form of music and is not going to hurt anyone by doing this.
In conclusion, I believe it was acceptable that he was suspended because his lyrics were threatening and distracting. Many would agree that the safety of the staff and the students was more important. Even though as students we are allowed freedom of speech, we need to be cautious not to use it in a way that may cause disruptions in our schools or cause threats against someone’s life. When speaking outside of school, you may have the freedom to say whatever you please, but you still need to remain cautious of what you say.
Junk Food Essay
Our modern generation has been hit with a craze of junk food and this is not only affecting us but generations to come. The children of today are suffering from this junk food. For the first time since the Great Depression kids are projected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. A factor that plays a key role in this is selling junk food at school. In order to end this problematic situation we must attack this problem of junk food were it starts (school). According to New York Times and Norton center School in America should eradicate junk food because it causes health issues, leads to obesity, and creates financial issues.
To begin with, junk food can lead to difficult health consequences such as heart disease or develop diabetes. According to source c, it mentions, “70% of obese children have at least one risk factor for heart disease”. This relates to us because it could cause us health difficulties. Higher levels of other diseases and other health problems. Some ways to change that are for example replacing the junk food for more nutritious food. There would be a lower level of obese problem and help the people be more healthy. Some people would disagree with having snack bars in school, because it would be obese. Not only that but also “⅓ of kids born after 2000 will develop diabetes”.
To add on, junk food being unhealthy it also leads to obesity. Sixty million adults (20% of the population) According to Source a it states, “Nearly 300,000 people die each year from complications associated with being obese or overweight.” This means that nearly 300,000 die each year because they are overweight or obese. If we keep going at this rate more people will die and the obesity population will increase. According to Source C, it explains, “43% of the U.S. population will be obese by 2018.” This means that nearly half of the U.S. will be obese by 2018. This is a problem because you will have more expenses for medical bills. Many people would disagree saying the school lunch is worse than what they are selling. According to Source A, it states, “What about fried chicken fingers, cheeseburgers, and pizza-foods many school cafeterias serve?” What they are saying is, what about the school lunch, isn’t that unhealthy? Obesity may be a problem on junk food but what about the financial issues?
Last but not least, junk food creates financial issues. It states that in source C that, “by 2018 the U.S. will spend $344,000,000,000 on obesity related health care causes”. This is equivalent to the cost of 13,835,959.4 years of college education. This means we are spending more money on obesity healthcare causes, than going to college. To add on to this, obesity treatment is a very expensive costs. According to Source C, it states that, “Children treated for obesity are 300% more expensive for our healthcare system than kids of a healthy weight.” This means that we are wasting money on treatment, but instead we can prevent it by staying healthy. While many others argue that schools should not stop selling junk food because some students don't eat school lunch and will just buy snacks from the snack bar, and the majority of those students are healthy. In conclusion, we need to stop wasting money on treatments and stay healthy if we stay healthy we save money.
In Conclusion, junk food should be banned from schools because it is unhealthy, leads to obesity, and can be cause financial issues. This can cause a conflict in our society and the world. A conflict can occur because soon half of our population will be obese or overweight. We should put a stop to this before the population of obesity increases.
DWA essay
Football is a sport that almost everybody enjoys. You get to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and watch the game. But what if somebody from the NFL refused to stand for the National Anthem. On August 26, 2016 NFL 49er, Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem because of racial injustice and police brutality. This leads back to the question, is it disrespectful that NFL players do not stand but take a knee during the National Anthem. I do not think it is disrespectful that NFL players take a knee during the National Anthem because, he is expressing the way he feels about the black community and he has the freedom to express the way he feels on the situation.
To begin with, NFL players should be able to take a knee during the National Anthem because of his expression on the black community. According to Document Kaepernick said, “I'm not going to show pride in a flag for our country that oppresses black people and people of color… To me this is more than Football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.” What Kaepernick is saying is why should he show respect to a country that oppresses the black community. Other NFL player like Jabrill Peppers agree to Kaepernick for taking a knee. According to Document A Jabrill Peppers mentioned, “There’s a lot of racial and social and social social injustices in the world that are going on right now. We just decided to take a knee and pray for the people who have been affected and just pray for the world in general...we were not trying to disrespect the flag pr be a distraction to the team, but as to tomen we thought we had the right to stand up for what we believed in, and we demonstrated that.” Now expression to the black community was not disrespectful for kneeling what about their freedom to express on the situation.
Last but not least, NFL players should be able to kneel because he has the freedom to express the way he feels. According to the First Amendment in Document B it quotes, “It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or rights of individuals to speak freely.” This proves that Kaepernick can express the way he feels on racial injustices. Not only does the First Amendment back him up so does former President, Obama. According to Obama in Document A it states, “Exercising his constitutional right to make a statement. I think there’s a long history of sports figures doing so.” This proves that not only has Kaepernick expressed the way he feels on racial injustices other sport figures have done it to. Now people may say that he should stand for the National Anthem because many people fought for his country and he is dishonoring it.
In conclusion, it is not disrespectful to kneel because he is expressing the way he feels about the black community and he has the freedom to do so. Till this day other NFL players have kneeled because of racial injustice. Once there is a stop to racial injustice, I believe Kaepernick and other NFL players will stop kneeling and will stand for the National Anthem.
